It’s still a little while until Halloween, but many of us are already coming up with Avatar costume ideas: this is set to be one of the biggest Halloween themes of 2011 and beyond!
The official Avatar Na’vi Halloween costumes will be in huge demand at Halloween, but if you’re planning on having an Avatar costume party before then, or want to know more about creating your own Avatar Halloween costume to give you enough time, keep reading!
Avatar Costume Ideas for Adults
The best Avatar costume ideas for adults are undoubtedly going to be the two main characters of the story: Jake Sully and Neytiri.
Jake Sully: Sully is a disabled former marine who became part of the Avatar program after his brother died. He quickly came to love the residents of Pandora: the Na’vi, and the new abilities that his Na’vi Avatar brought to him.

Neytiri: Neytiri is the main Na’vi character of the film, the daughter of the leader, who is quickly attracted to Jake but torn when she discovers his secret mission.
Whatever you’re do, you’re going to have to be able to replicate those distinctive blue Na’vi markings with makeup or a good quality mask and body suit (keep reading below for more info about the Na’vi characteristics).
Avatar Costume Ideas for Kids
Choosing an Avatar costume for kids will probably mean basing it on the same characters above, or simply creating a costume that makes them their own citizen of the Na’vi clan on Pandora. An Avatar costume for kids is the perfect theme for any dress up party!

I recommend you buy these Avatar Halloween costumes as early as possible because they’re going to be some of the biggest sellers this year. At least buying your costume, rather than making it from scratch, means your Avatar Halloween costume will look just like the original characters from the movie! Also perfect if you don’t have time to make your own, as Avatar costume ideas can be quite complex to say the least!
Avatar Costume Ideas: Get The Na’vi Look Right
There are a few things you’ll need to bear in mind when getting the Na’vi look for your Halloween party or costume party. Here’s a quick guide to all the different Na’vi features so that you can get your Avatar costume supplies just right:
Body: You’ll need to get an aqua blue body suit for the base of your costume. This is the base from which all of your Avatar costumes will need to be placed – so it’s important you get it right!
Stripes: The Na’vi have very distinctive markings, stripes all over the body. These are bold across the sides of the body and the arms (see the images for an example) and could be added using fabric paint, or you could buy an Avatar Halloween costume ready-made.
Apron and Arm Gauntlet: All of the Na’vi wear a small apron around the waist and a gauntlet around the arm.
Ears: The avatar costume ears are also important for getting the distinctive Na’vi look. You could either get specific Avatar costume packs for this, or pick up some elf ears and paint them blue to match your body.
Avatar Makeup: The Na’vi people don’t have eyebrows, so you’ll want to paint your makeup over them. Use blue cream makeup on your face and other areas not covered by your body suit. Blend it over your ears to make it look more realistic. Then use a lighter shade of blue to add thin stripes. If you want to make your nose look as slim as the Na’vi, add the lighter shade down the edges of your nose. Lastly, you’ll need a darker shade to add the stripes and Na’vi freckles to your forehead (see the end of this page for a good makeup tutorial video).
Hair: Don’t forget the wig on your list of Avatar costume supplies! If you want to look like a true Na’vi then you’ll want to get a braided wig, with beads at the end of the strands. For an even better look, add some feathers to the end. Make sure your wig fits around your avatar costume ears nicely.
Tail: The Avatar costume tail comes with ready-made costume packs or you can make your own. You could buy a standard Halloween costume tail and dye it, or use a wire and wrap fabric around it for a completely unique Avatar costume tail!
Eyes: If you really want to complete the look then get your hands on some yellow contact lenses – you’ll look like a true Na’vi! These Avatar costume ideas & accessories may not be as necessary as the rest but it’ll certainly make your Avatar Halloween costume stand out above everyone else’s at your Avatar costume party!
